A Creative Spirit

NANIS lead designer Laura Bicego is the second generation in a family of jewelry-makers. Having learned the trade from a very young age, Laura fostered her love for jewelry-making while working alongside her father.

Laura’s family hails from the Vicenza, Italy, a village rich with centuries’ worth of goldsmith tradition and, today, is considered Italy’s premier gold center. Remarkably, despite Vicenza’s vast production, most of its goods still come from modest family-run workshops, honoring the region’s longstanding jewelry-making traditions.

NANIS was founded in 1990 by Laura and her husband Piero Marangon. The brand has thrived in the Vicenza region, growing from a small team of three to a 100-person operation— all while maintaining close control over its production which still employs Vicenza’s time-honored craft-making techniques.

Laura is the creative spirit of the NANIS brand. While her father crafted individual pieces of jewelry, Laura envisioned a thoughtful collection of luxurious and feminine designs. NANIS began as a reflection of Laura’s personal style and taste: modern elegance bathed with artistic flair.

The NANIS collection includes unexpected and uniquely twisted and sculpted shapes that are finely attuned to today’s tastes and produced with traditional goldsmith methods. Laura’s designs are further distinguished by its signature matte brush finish that takes 10 hours alone to cure and gives NANIS’s gold jewelry its signature silky texture.

Laura and her team meticulously craft each piece to be comfortable and lightweight and will revisit and fine-tune her past favorites to perfect their design. As a testament to wearability and her commitment to designing only pieces she feels passionate about, Laura wears her own prototypes herself to get a real feel for a piece, its weight and how it hangs. Some NANIS designs (like the large chain necklaces) are impressive-looking but are, in fact, hollow to make them unexpectedly lightweight and easy to wear.
